Think Tank focuses on adaptive futures for delta regions

Earlier this week, researchers and partners involved in the Floating Future programme participated in a Think Tank session on scenario planning, organised together with the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.

The session focused on the role of scenario planning in addressing complex societal and spatial challenges. Rather than predicting a single future, scenario planning helps explore multiple possible futures, test assumptions, and better understand how strategic decisions may unfold under uncertainty.

For floating urban development, this approach is particularly relevant. Floating solutions intersect with water management, spatial planning, housing, ecology, governance, technology, and public value. As a result, long-term thinking and adaptive planning are essential for developing resilient and future-proof strategies.

During the workshop, participants applied scenario planning methods to concrete Floating Future case studies. Researchers explored hybrid future scenarios by combining elements from contrasting perspectives, enabling them to identify opportunities, tensions, and synergies between different development pathways.

The discussions highlighted the importance of placing water management considerations at the centre of future planning while maintaining sufficient flexibility and adaptability to respond to emerging realities and changing environmental conditions.

The session provided valuable insights into how floating development can contribute to resilient, liveable, and adaptive delta regions in the years ahead.

Blue Revolution Foundation values these collaborative and forward-looking exchanges as an important part of advancing sustainable innovation and climate adaptation strategies.
