Exploring climate-resilient port infrastructure in Rotterdam
Last week, Blue Revolution Foundation joined the first ClimateCafé of the Rotterdam Energy Transition case study within the Floating Future research programme.
The session focused on the ongoing transformation of the Port of Rotterdam in response to the energy transition and the increasing need for climate-resilient infrastructure. Through interdisciplinary exchange and practical activities, participants explored how the port is evolving as a dynamic system shaped by environmental, spatial, and economic challenges.
The programme combined interactive dialogue, scenario-based backcasting exercises, hands-on design activities, a visit to Portlantis, and a boat tour through the Maasvlakte area. These activities enabled participants to better understand the complexity of the port environment and identify opportunities for adaptive and future-proof development.
The Climate Café brought together researchers, practitioners, designers, and stakeholders from different sectors, helping to connect perspectives on infrastructure, sustainability, spatial planning, and resilience.
The day generated valuable discussions and practical insights into how ports and coastal infrastructure can adapt to climate and energy transition challenges in the coming decades.
Blue Revolution Foundation values these interdisciplinary collaborations as an important driver for innovation in resilient, water-based, and sustainable development.
Special thanks to all participants, presenters, organisers, and to Portlantis for hosting the event.
