Rotterdam water atlas: Mapping opportunities for floating development

Rotterdam Municipality has announced a new initiative which seeks to map out the possibilities for floating development in the city.

An estimated 2.6 million euros has been earmarked to map out all the water in Rotterdam in a special Water Atlas, which should be ready next spring. An inventory is made of the possibilities and impossibilities of the rivers and lakes.

As stated by Bas Kurvers, “I am also thinking of small-scale initiatives such as paddleboarding, kayaking or swimming competitions. Or floating events and concerts. Too little attention is paid to temporary activities on the water ”, he says. “Moreover, initiators are not sure what the possibilities are and who they can turn to.”

This exciting initiative offers enormous possibility and offers an important next step towards larger-scale sustainable floating developments.
